This policy explains what stays on your device, what is shared when you choose to enable Stats, and how limited technical data is handled when you use the TeachAssist for YRDSB iOS app.

Last updated September 5, 2026

The short version

  • Your student credentials and detailed school data stay on your device. Credentials are sent directly to ta.yrdsb.ca only when needed to sign in or refresh your data. They are never sent elsewhere.
  • Stats is optional. If you enable it, limited course and school information is submitted without your name or student number and used to create privacy-protected averages.
  • We use third-party services for analytics, crash reporting, security, hosting, and ads. Those services may process technical, device, and advertising data as described below.

1. Scope

This Privacy Policy applies to the TeachAssist for YRDSB iOS app. References to “TeachAssist for YRDSB iOS app” mean the app, while “we,” “us,” and “our” refer to its independent developer.

The TeachAssist for YRDSB iOS App is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or operated by the York Region District School Board (“YRDSB”) or the TeachAssist Foundation.

2. School data stored on your device

To keep you signed in and show your school information, the app stores your student number, password, and YRDSB session information in the iOS Keychain. Your school, courses, grades, assignments, schedule, updates, mark history, and app preferences are cached in app storage on your device.

When you sign in or refresh, your credentials and session information are sent over an encrypted connection directly to ta.yrdsb.ca so the app can retrieve the information you requested. We do not proxy those requests through any other services.

Signing out ends the active account session and clears cached courses and updates. Some information managed by the iOS Keychain or device backups may remain on the device until it is overwritten or removed through your device settings.

3. Optional Stats submissions

Stats is off until you choose to enable it. When enabled, the app may send the following to our server:

  • Your school name;
  • Current course codes and course names;
  • Your current overall average for each submitted course;
  • Course end dates; and
  • A randomly generated anonymous identifier.

A Stats submission does not include your name, student number, password, YRDSB session token, assignment names, or individual assignment marks.

We use submissions to calculate course and school averages across YRDSB. Public results are shown only after a minimum sample size is reached. The app does not provide access to an individual student's submission.

You can turn Stats off at any time in Settings. Sharing stops immediately and the app requests deletion of your current source submission.

4. Analytics, diagnostics, and security

We collect limited technical and usage information to operate, secure, and improve the app. This may include app activity, feature use, session and refresh activity, broad error categories, crash and diagnostic information, device and app information, and app-integrity signals.

We do not include credentials, course or school names, grades, assignment content, Stats consent identifiers, request bodies, or raw server errors in analytics.

5. Advertising

The app displays ads through Google Mobile Ads (AdMob) and may use mediated advertising providers such as Meta Audience Network. These providers may process information such as your IP address and IP-derived approximate location, app and device information, advertising or app-instance identifiers where available, ads shown, views and taps, and diagnostic or fraud-prevention data.

Depending on your device settings, consent choices, location, and applicable law, this information may be used to deliver, measure, secure, or personalize advertising. We do not provide advertising partners with your YRDSB credentials, assignments, grades, or Stats submissions.

Learn more about how advertising providers use data in Google's partner-sites policy and the Meta Privacy Policy. You can also use iOS privacy settings to limit tracking permissions available to apps.

6. How we use information

We use information described in this policy to:

  • Provide the app and the features you request;
  • Retrieve and display your school information from YRDSB;
  • Create and display privacy-protected course and school statistics when Stats is enabled;
  • Understand feature use and improve the app;
  • Diagnose crashes, errors, and performance problems;
  • Deliver and measure ads; and
  • Protect the app, users, and backend from fraud, abuse, or security threats.

7. When information is shared

Information may be processed by:

  • ta.yrdsb.ca, when you ask the app to sign in, refresh data, or perform a school-related action;
  • Google and Firebase, for hosting, authentication, app integrity, feature configuration, analytics, crash reporting, support forms, and advertising;
  • Meta Audience Network and other enabled ad partners, for ad delivery, measurement, and fraud prevention;
  • Apple, for app distribution, platform services, App Attest, and MapKit; and
  • Authorities or other parties when required to comply with law, enforce rights, investigate abuse, or protect users and the app.

We do not sell your student credentials, assignments, grades, or Stats submissions. Advertising providers process advertising and device data under their own terms, and some privacy laws may define certain advertising-related disclosures as “sharing” or a “sale.”

8. Retention and deletion

  • On-device school data remains until it is refreshed or removed. Signing out ends the active login and clears cached courses and updates. Keychain and backup data is also subject to iOS behaviour and your device settings.
  • Stats source data is replaced when the app sends a newer snapshot. It is deleted after you turn off Stats or sign out and the deletion request reaches the server.
  • Analytics, diagnostics, advertising, hosting, and support data is retained according to operational need, our service configuration, and the applicable provider's retention practices.

Aggregated statistics that can no longer reasonably be associated with an individual may be retained to operate and understand the app.

9. Your choices and privacy requests

  • Enable or disable Stats from the app's Settings screen.
  • Sign out to end the active account session, clear cached courses and updates, and request deletion of an active Stats submission.
  • Manage or delete app data using the controls available through the app and iOS, keeping in mind that Keychain and backup data may follow separate device settings.
  • Use iOS privacy settings to control permissions and advertising tracking choices available on your device.

You may contact us to ask about access, correction, or deletion of information you have provided. Some technical information is pseudonymous and may not be possible for us to associate with you without information from your device. Aggregated statistics cannot be used to retrieve an individual submission.

The app contains links to third-party websites and uses third-party services that we do not control. Their privacy practices are governed by their own policies. Review those policies before providing information to an external service.

11. Changes to this policy

We may update this policy as the app changes. The “Last updated” date above shows when it was most recently revised. Material changes may also be highlighted in the app when appropriate.
